In a major survey done on Bhojpuri films by “The Sunday Indian” and “ICMR” the general public have chosen Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua as the best actor and Pakhi Hegde as the best actress. This is contrary to the choice of critics who have placed them at lower places.
This difference of opinion is seen also in the director and music director categories. Popularly best director is Aslam Shekh and best music director is Dhananjay Mishra. Critics have choosen Rajkumar R.Pandey and Madhukar Anand instead.
Best Villain is Awadhesh Mishra, Best Comedian Manoj Tiger, Best Male Singer Udit Narayan, Best Female Singer Kalpana, Best Lyricist Vinay Bihari, Best scriptwriter Santosh Mishra, Best Newcomers are Pravesh Lal Yadav and Shubhi Sharma, Best Character artists are Kunal Singh and Roshan Jahangir, Best Item-girl Sambhawna Seth, Best Choreographer Kanu Mukherjee, Best Art Director Anjani Tiwari, and Best Action Director is Shakeel.
“Bhumiputra” was chosen as the best film of year 2009 while “Deewana” came second.
The most interesting finding of the survey was that majority of the viewers feel Hindi films are more vulgar as compared to Bhojpuri cinema. They also think that music and songs are the main reason of the popularity of Bhojpuri cinema. At the same time a very large proportion of viewers feel that the Bhojpuri cinema is not showing the Bhojpuri culture in general and they don’t think these films deserve sending to international film festivals.
