Bhojpuri cinema is 50 years old and a celebration is on in Patna. A three days festival has been organized there where plans are to show the golden classic Bhojpuri films. Whenever one see the video or hear the songs of the film one gets nostalgic about those days. But then the people coming to Bhojpuri cinema has passion for doing something for their mother tongue, specially the producers and the directors. Lyricists like Moti B.A. had already made Bhojpuri songs a hit formula for Bollywood films. But the songs of “Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhayebo” written by Shailendra and the music composed by Chitragupta is still uncomparable. No such talent is visible these days in Bhojpuri cinema, howsoever technically strong these films may be. Films are not judged by their technical superiority. it is the message these films convey is what that matters. Unfortunately, these days the Bhojpuri cinema and music industry has fallen into the grips of money lords who have nothing to do with Bhojpuri language or culture. To quote a famous saying it all about money honey !
One wonders why talents like Aamir Khan avoid Bhojpuri cinema, specially when they belong to Bhojpuri belt and easily portray the cultural sensibility of its people. Unfortunately these talents are no where to be seen in Bhojpuri entertainment industry. Instead of such talented people one see a lot of non-Bhojpuri speaking producers, directors, and music directors. No one can or should expect Bhojpuri sensibility from these people, they are only after the money the Bhojpuri films and music give them.
Regularly one reads of something of this or that in Bhojpuri. There is always a Devdas, a Madhuri, a Helen, a Pran or anything in Bhojpuri cinema and these feats are frequently mentioned as achievement ! The debauchery seen and heard in Bhojpuri music and films are nothing to mention. These are even beyond the naural openness of Bhojpuri and transgress any limit or say they can go to any depth. But as one has said recently that the growth of Bhojpuri entertainment is like “Samudra Manthan” of an earlier era when poison came out even before the “Amrita” was generated from that great churning of sea-water. Bit no where a Shiva is visible who can keep the poison thus generated in his throat to save guard the universe of Bhojpuri.
To take the mythological story further the ruling command these days are in the hands of “asuras” while “devtas” are keeping mum. Speak out sir, and speak out loudly. Time is slipping fast.
